Animal growth and development involves the regulated expression of many genes in a temporal order. The advent of DNA microarrays gives us new and expanded opportunities to examine the patterns of gene expression for growing and developing animals. However, proteins are the major functional components of animal bodies, and protein expression can be strongly influenced by post-transcriptional events. The emerging field of proteomics is helping to define protein expression profiles, which is especially exciting as proteomics may allow description of complex systems at the molecular level in real-time. Toward that goal, CBAA faculty are using systematic approaches to investigate a) Molecular Responses to Stimuli, and b) Modeling of Tissue Growth.
